Degree Class LM-33 - Master Degrees in Mechanical Engineering
automatically translated page
The International Master's Degree Course in Advanced Automotive Engineering has its administrative seat at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and is conducted in cooperation with the universities of Bologna, Ferrara and Parma.
It is offered entirely in English and was designed and built thanks to the contribution of the most prestigious Emilia-Romagna companies operating internationally in the automotive sector and strongly supported by the Emilia-Romagna Region in the framework of the MUNER Association, which brings together the various realities.
The professional profile of the Vehicle Engineer (Advanced Automotive Engineer) is that of a professional who, starting from a basic industrial and, at least initially, mechanical/mechatronic knowledge, is able, on the basis of a complete overview of the vehicle system, to design, develop and produce the main sub-systems that make up road vehicles and motorbikes, with particular reference to the premium market and competition vehicles, and to develop and manage the related technological and production processes.
In cooperation with its industrial partners, the degree course comprises six curricula, one of which is replicated at the Modena and Bologna sites, thus offering specific professional profiles:
- Advanced Motorcycle Engineering: deals with the design and development of high-tech motorbikes, both mass-produced and dedicated to competition. It deals with and manages aspects of electronic engineering and industrial design that are peculiar to motorbikes.
- Advanced Powertrain: deals with the design and engineering of traditional and innovative propulsion systems, with a focus on their optimisation, control and solution of environmental and energy issues.
- Advanced Sprtscar Manufacturing: deals with the planning, development, control and management of automotive production processes and systems, with particular reference to the use of the latest digital technologies.
- High Performance Car Design: deals with setting up and developing the vehicle system, starting with an understanding of the fundamentals, and designing all major groups and sub-groups of high performance road vehicles.
- Off-Highway Vehicle Engineering: deals with the design and development of high-tech off-road vehicles, with reference to modern issues of electrification and autonomous driving.
- Racing Car Design: deals with setting up the vehicle system and designing all the main groups and sub-groups of racing vehicles. It is characterised by an increased specialisation in aerodynamic aspects, the use of lightweight materials (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Materials), and a strong ability to perform experimental work.
The main foreseen job opportunities are in manufacturing or service companies engaged in the design and production of premium or competition motor vehicles and motorbikes and in the related supply chains, which are active internationally.
The members of the Study Course Councils (CdS) are defined annually on the basis of the prevailing teaching loads.
Each Council is assisted in the planning and/or revision of the educational offering by a Steering Committee, which meets at least once a year.
The Master Degree Course in Advanced Automotive Engineering has a limited number of places (140 places, from A.Y. 2024-25).
It is necessary to have certain curricular requirements indicated in the admission notice and to have graduated with a mark of 95/110 or higher (or in any case not lower than 86% of the maximum score obtainable or corresponding to the mark obtained by the best 30% of students, if the degree was obtained abroad) and to have a knowledge of English at least equivalent to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Candidates meeting the requirements will also have to undergo an interview, which will aim to verify both their technical skills and command of the English language.
Please carefully check the deadlines in the Admission Notice.
The Master Degree Course in Advanced Automotive Engineering has established the obligation for all students to complete a study plan.
Submission of the study plan must take place during the second year, approximately from 15 November to 30 January (dates to be confirmed each year). Compilation during the first year is not envisaged.
Compilation must normally be done via the Web on Esse3, under the heading "Career Plan", and only in special cases on paper using the special form available from the Engineering Student Secretariat (Via Campi 213/b).
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CURRICULUM
Students enrolled cohort* 2017, cohort 2018, cohort 2019 and cohort 2020
Curricula Advanced Powertrain Modena, High Performance Car Design and Racing car Design: the student must choose examinations for 12 cfu.
Curricula Advanced Powertrain Bologna, Advanced Motorcycle Engineering and Advanced Sportscar Manufacturing: students must choose examinations for 12 cfu; they must also make a choice between a 12 cfu Traineeship and a 6 cfu Traineeship; if they choose the 6 cfu Traineeship, they must choose a further 6 cfu from the proposed Lab.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION ON ONLINE COMPILATION
There are two alternatives for filling in the online study plan, which can be viewed once you have entered the Esse3 personal area, under the heading Career plan:
1) an 'APPR' study plan scheme, whereby the completed plan is automatically approved: this scheme, provides only the courses offered by the Master Degree in Advanced Automotive Engineering;
2) a 'PROP' study plan scheme, which must then be evaluated by the Course Council and which must only be chosen by:
- students transferring from another degree course/university who have had optional examinations officially approved by the previous Course Concil and already included within the digital student record. Only if the examinations of the transfer/transfer resolution have not been uploaded onto the electronic transcript or if the validation request has not yet been made, the plan must be completed by means of the appropriate paper form distributed at the Student Secretariat in via Campi 213/b, to be returned before the deadline during reception hours;
- students who have passed optional examinations during an Erasmus Period that have already been officially approved by the Course Council and included whitin the digital students record;
- students who wish to choose examinations from the other curricula of the Master Degree Course in Advanced Automotive Engineering;
- students who wish to take extra-annual examinations of AAE, after having asked the Student secretariat to upload the didactic activity to their transcripts; it is advisable, if one intends to take extra-annual examinations, to obtain prior information from the President of the Degree Course, in order to avoid non-approval, which would lead, in the event that the extra-annual examinations have already been taken, to NOT being able to consider them in one's career (since they will be considered supernumerary) and will not be part of the number of CFUs needed to obtain the degree and therefore the need to take further examinations.
Plans in PROP status will be evaluated by the Course Council after the deadline for compiling plans.
If the plan is rejected, the student will be contacted for re-completion.
Tutoring, in compliance with the provisions of Article 13 of Law 341/90, is a service designed to assist students enrolled at university throughout their studies, removing obstacles to successful course attendance and encouraging active participation in university life.
The tutor is a point of reference to whom one can turn for advice, for help in getting into one's studies and for all forms of assistance aimed at making university studies more effective and productive.
The tutor teacher in particular can provide methodological and didactic support, aimed at overcoming learning difficulties (e.g. preparing for an exam, relating the contents of the various disciplines, clarifying doubts on study subjects) or can contact students in difficulty directly to propose support actions arranged by the University.
